Two years ago this month, 6-year-old Hind Rajab was with relatives fleeing Israel’s ground invasion in Gaza City. After their car was hit by a tank, Hind was left alone in the car for hours, next to the dead bodies of her family. The Palestine Red Crescent Society, a humanitarian group that provides health and social services, was on the phone with her for hours until two paramedics were sent to rescue her. Those paramedics were shot in their ambulance by an Israeli tank, and both died.

Hind Rajab’s voice went silent at 7:30, and days later, the PRCS managed to gain entry to where she was, which had previously been closed off. Her body, along with six other relatives, were found in a car riddled with 355 bullets.

The Voice of Hind Rajab, directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, uses real audio from the PRCS’s call with Hind, and documents the crescent society’s difficulties balancing rules and regulations while trying to save her.

Airing in major and smaller cities across the country, The Voice of Hind Rajab will be shown at theatres from Jan. 30 through Feb. 6. Tickets can be bought at thevoiceofhindrajabfilm.com.

The genocide in Gaza has been the deadliest conflict for children in the modern century. Save the Children reports that at least on Palestinian child has been killed every hour for the past 23 months. Every hour, as you read this, another child, like Hind, draws their last breath. In total, 20,000 children have been killed and at least 21,000 left permanently disabled.

Wissam Hamada, mother of Hind Rajab, said Hind dreamed of being a doctor so she could help others. She, and thousands of other children, were robbed of their dreams, not by accident, but by intention.

“This occupation did not have mercy on her,” Hamada said.

“I hope I see you in heaven, my baby.”
