Holding the Occupation Accountable: Live updates

After the US military conducted strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic military position, Iran launched an attack that targeted Kuwait’s international airport. In Lebanon, the Israeli occupation forces continue to launch attacks on its southern suburbs, at a time when Iran has made it clear negotiations will not continue if Israel does not end its illegal invasion of Lebanon, which has garnered wide condemnation from the international community. Violence continues in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, as Israeli occupation forces continue to conduct strikes on central Gaza, and Israeli settler violence causes significant damage to Palestinian farmland.

Long-term consequences of US and Israel’s war on Iran

Even if a ceasefire that reopens the Strait is negotiated, agreed and truly upheld, there are numerous logistical hurdles that remain in the way. If a ceasefire that allows shipment to pass through to the US is upheld, there could be over a 40-50 day lag between peace being brokered and shipment reaching its intended destination.

Looking at the larger picture, it could take well over a year and some change for oil inventories across the world to recover, and every day that passes by exponentially adds to that figure.

Do not stop talking about Minnesota

The escalation in violence in the past few months has made it clear that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is engaging in genocidal practices, and this federal administration must be held accountable for its crimes against humanity. Recent reporting from 404 Media, an independent digital media company, shows the clearest link between ELITE, digital infrastructure being created for ICE to use in regular operations, and ICE’s recent activity in the field. With the murder of Good and the inhumane treatment of detainees in ICE detention camps, the actions of this administration reflect the fascist ideology and the authoritative nature that were always embedded in the Trump administration.

YDSA protests federal involvement in Columbia

Right outside the Missouri United Methodist Church on Ninth Street, a statue of a man lies on a bench, huddled in a blanket. Upon closer examination of the oddly-familiar bearded face, if the crucifixion wounds on his feet didn’t give it away already, “Homeless Jesus” can be recognized as a reminder to the city’s responsibility to its unhoused population. However, if this statue were the real Jesus, he would be criminalized under Columbia’s proposed Pedestrian Safety Ordinance. This ordinance would prohibit individuals from occupying almost all medians in the city.

BREAKING: Israel launches airstrike on residential area in Qatar

On Sept. 9, Israel launched an airstrike on the City of Doha, Qatar, targeting Hamas leadership as they were discussing US President Donald Trump's ceasefire proposal.
This attack makes Qatar the sixth arab country that Israel has bombed in the past month, on top of regular attacks on Gaza, the West Bank, Yemen, Syria and Lebanon. Since the break of dawn, Israel has killed 52 Palestinians, and millions are still being starved by Israel's manmade famine.

The start, but not the end

After tens, if not hundreds, of lives were lost from the genocide in Gaza, a ceasefire was brokered between Israel and Hamas on Jan. 19. The last act of the Biden administration shows promise, but as an Israeli airstrike on a residential area in Gaza not even a day after indicates, this is not the end of Israeli violence for Palestinians. However, Trump’s plans to take ownership of the Gaza strip, deporting the population in the process, has only weakened the already thin ice this ceasefire stands on.

The liberation of Syria

In the early hours of the day on Dec. 8, rebel forces in Syria declared the nation free from the tyrannical rule of Bashar al-Assad and his family’s regime after decades of struggle. The Assad family has ruled Syria with an iron fist, executing anyone in opposition. With support from Russia and Iran, the Assad regime was able to enact numerous war crimes on the people of Syria. From chemical warfare, frequent bombings of residential areas, and the murder of children, for decades the voices begging for freedom were squandered by forces of tyrannical evil. To ensure an atrocity like this can never happen to any other society, it’s important to understand the history and context behind this conflict between a people who fought for their rights, and a government obsessed with maintaining power.

South korean president declares martial law

President Yoon has struggled with controlling the country’s parliament, as the opposing party has put parliament in political gridlock. Yeol accuses the party of sympathizing with communist North Korea. The South Korean military and tanks can be seen marching down the streets, an authoritative move that has not been seen since the 1980s. Yoon’s party immediately denounced the decree, with all 190 of the 300 members of parliament voting to lift the martial law. President Yoon is forced to comply, however, under the South Korean constitution, there is no specified time constraint. As of 1:00 a.m. in South Korea, troops have begun withdrawing, but it’s still unclear whether Yoon will comply.

The Power of a word

A weapon is a tool used to harm others. There exist many variations of these tools. From sticks and stones to guns and bombs, our tools to kill one another have become more advanced, but the only tool we need for peace remains unchanged. Our voice is the most powerful tool we have in our arsenal, and any person can use it. However, the most accessible tool at our disposal has been seldom used in this past year. Since the genocide in Gaza began, the response from our media has been embarrassing. In a war where thousands of innocents have had their lives taken away from them, they’re treated as another tally to the death toll. Journalists in the US have failed the people of Palestine, forcing them to take matters into their own hands. Hundreds, if not thousands of Palestinians have taken to social media, begging for their lives.

Is 2024 the year for the clippers?

For decades, there’s been a few guarantees; death, taxes, and the Clippers being bad at basketball. The last one has remained true despite any efforts to make title contending teams. I almost feel bad, no matter what the front office tries to do, they just can’t win! This year however, they might be in a position to finally reach the promised land and make a run for the championship.
